The region’s evolving environmental and political context means we will continue to be agile and adaptive, as we respond to regulatory and environmental changes.

Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services:

  • Environmental Regulation and Protection
  • Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards
  • Public Transport

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As a Hazard Risk and Resilience Planner with the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group, you will lead science-informed planning and strategic policy development to ensure decision-making is evidence-based and aligned with national direction.  Your work will sit at the intersection of hazard science, public policy and operational emergency management. This role is pivotal in fostering strong partnerships, promoting best practice, and ensuring inclusive, coordinated approaches to emergency management.

This is a senior planning role focused on integrating hazard science, risk analysis and policy into the CDEM framework.  You will support the wider CDEM group to understand and respond to complex and evolving hazards by translating science and evidence into effective plans, policies and programmes across the 4R’s: Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery.

You will be a key member of the Risk Reduction and Resilience team, reporting to the Team Leader - Risk Reduction and Resilience.  You will also work closely with the Group Welfare Manager, Community Resilience Advisor, and Group Office Programme Manager.

This role requires participation in the Group Emergency Management Office Duty Officer roster on a  4 - 6 week cycle.

Mōu │ About You

You will be a senior planner who enjoys making sense of complex and uncertain information and translating it into advice, plans and policy settings that support effective decision-making across the CDEM system.

You are trusted for your analytical thinking, systems perspective and ability to work credibly with scientists, policy makers and operational leaders alike.  You value collaboration, are confident operating in multi-agency environments, and understand the importance of evidence, context and partnership when dealing with risk and resilience.

You will be a confident and collaborative person with a strong background in emergency management, communications, and community engagement.  If you value cultural inclusivity, understand the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and are committed to working alongside iwi and communities to create safer, more prepared futures then we would like to hear from you.
