As a regional council, we are responsible for managing natural resources including air, soil, water and land. We work in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tahu to protect the health of our environment to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our region.

Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services:

  • Environmental Regulation and Protection
  • Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards
  • Public Transport

 Council plays an important role in responding to national legislation and policy changes – this mahi is part of our operating environment and is embedded in our everyday mahi. The current proposals from central government are significant, and Council is working through the opportunities and implications. However, our mahi must continue to deliver our three core services for our partners, communities and te taiao (environment). 

 

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

The purpose of the Kaitohutohu Tumu Herenga | Advisor role is to provide quality advisory services across the Tumu Herenga section, providing, developing and contributing to the preparation, coherence and quality of advice and supporting key workstreams.

We have three roles available within Pou Rautaki, Pou Whakahaere and Pou Hononga.

These roles play a significant part across the Tumu Herenga, providing high quality, innovative advice, analysis and coordination on our Tiriti partnership aspirations within each of our Pou. 

You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with other Advisors, in support of the three Pou, and the dynamic Tumu Herenga team, along with other teams across the organisation. You’ll also ensure the coordination of projects, initiatives and deliverables that are geared to deliver on the outcomes that contribute to our goal of being a Tiriti partner of excellence.

Key accountabilities:

  • Develop and support timely provision of high-quality advice and assurance for briefings, papers and plans across the Pou Rautaki, Pou Whakahaere and Pou Hononga work programmes
  • Build and maintain strong and effective relationships within Tumu Herenga, Environment Canterbury teams, and ngā Papatipu Rūnanga
  • Work collaboratively to support and provide advice and analysis on systems, tools and processes that contribute to Tiriti partnership excellence
  • Provide high level coordination across the three Pou, Tumu Herenga team and wider organisation to maintain consistency and continuous improvement of business systems, records and information

Mōu │ About You

You’ll have demonstrated expertise in providing kaupapa Māori, Tiriti and partnership focussed advice, analysis and synthesis that will enable strong decision making, complemented by relationship management skills, particularly within te ao Māori. You will bring proven experience in fostering collaboration and achieving results in complex or unfamiliar environments. Additionally, you’ll possess:

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving capabilities to enable others, and be results-driven
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills that build trust and influence across diverse contexts
  • A commitment to integrating tikanga and te ao Māori principles into everyday organisational practice
  • Adaptability and resilience to thrive in dynamic, challenging situations

Your expertise will not only support organisational goals but also create meaningful, measurable impact for our partners and communities.

Mātau ā-Wheako | Experience  

  • A relevant tertiary qualification at NZQA Level 5 or above in (for example) Māori development, environmental mahi (e.g. mahika kai), and/or similar proven or applied experience that can be applied to this role
  • Qualification incorporating kaupapa Māori policy, strategy, advice, analysis, systems, business sytems and/or an educational background in kura kaupapa Māori (Te Aho Matua) is advantageous
  • Active commitment to uphold the values, tikanga, kawa, cultural practices and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngāi Tahu
  • Experience in working with whānau/hapū/iwi and/or Māori community development
  • Knowledge of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga, with a commitment to ongoing growth
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in a workplace setting
  • Experience working in the public sector environment in Aotearoa New Zealand is desirable
