Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

The focus of this role is to analyse and display environmental data to provide meaningful insights that meet the needs of our internal and external customers.

More about the role:

  • Perform advanced data analysis and communicate issues and findings effectively
  • Share technical expertise with colleagues to support and train them in data science practices (e.g. writing scripts for automation, modelling, visualising)
  • Demonstrate curiosity and innovation to continuously improve data science methods
  • Actively contribute to successful outcomes of a newly created Environmental Data Insights team
  • Collaborate with the Digital Solutions team to improve our data platforms and pipelines, and ensure efficient delivery of data insights to our customers

 

Mōu │ About You

You’re a senior data analyst or data scientist and have solid experience working with data from different sources; preferably environmental such as water quality, hydrology, air, ecology, or climate. You are adept at writing code, using data visualisation tools and establishing data pipelines. You have a natural ability to teach and upskill others, and a desire for continuous learning and innovation. You’ll have a master’s degree in a relevant field plus 2 years professional experience, or a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years professional experience is essential. 

To enjoy this role, you’ll have:

  • Proven ability to combine and analyse large, complex datasets of varying types, to uncover issues and patterns
  • Strong Python skills and experience using GitHub for data projects
  • Experience working in SQL and cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake), and developing data models that reflect the business needs
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce clear and meaningful insights
  • Experience designing dashboards (e.g. PowerBI, Streamlit) to display insightful information to various audiences
  • Experience with GIS is desirable
  • Solid understanding of APIs and ability to use them effectively
  • Ability to manage competing or changing priorities, and to deliver to tight deadlines
  • Strong team-working skills and the ability to build effective relationships across the organisation and externally
  • Demonstrated customer-centric approach
  • Willingness to learn and build knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga, te reo Māori, and te ao Māori

Hours of work – Permanent full-time position - From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community. 

Location - This position is predominantly based at 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch   
Salary - The indictive salary range for role is $74,306 to $91,790 per annum depending on skills and experience. The specific salary will be discussed at interview stage.
