As a regional council, we are responsible for managing natural resources including air, soil, water and land. We work in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tahu to protect the health of our environment to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our region.  

The region’s evolving environmental and political context means we will continue to be agile and adaptive, as we respond to regulatory and environmental changes.  

Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services:  

  • Environmental Regulation and Protection 
  • Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards 
  • Public Transport  

 

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

You’ll play a key role in establishing and maintaining a healthy and vibrant team culture, supporting our consent planners with their workloads, growth, and development whilst maintaining key stakeholder relationships.  You are pivotal to enabling our people to thrive. You’ll be leading and inspiring the next generation of consent planners. No two days are the same, the work is exciting and plentiful.  

More about the role:

  • Foster a strong team culture by living and promoting the Environment Canterbury values and supporting team well-being
  • Deliver an effective programme of training for team members and wider section
  • Collaboratively manage the consents workload, including the allocation of work
  • Effectively resolve complex problems
  • Identify and successfully manage risks including environmental; reputational; legislative; organisational; and financial
  • Help facilitate a growth in the understanding of Te Ao Maori in the consents section
  • Assist in strengthening stakeholder relationships
  • Help shape how we engage with the community and external stakeholders

You will love to lead teams and inspire high performance.  You’ll bring your passion for people, communities, and the environment and be excited by the opportunities that resource management within Waitaha | Canterbury has to offer you.  You’ll have a solid understanding of Resource Management, ideally with a tertiary qualification.  A thorough understanding of how local government undertakes its resource management functions is desirable.  You’re a confident communicator with well-developed interpersonal skills. You’re solutions-focused and enjoy a positive outcome along with the skills to inspire and develop our people. You’re driven, can work independently, and love to achieve targets and goals.   

You’ll have an interest in ensuring that mana whenua aspirations are reflected in our regulatory framework.

Hours of work – Permanent Full-Time – 40 hours per week 
Location - This role is based at 200 Tuam Street 
Salary - The indictive salary range for role is $101,839 to $125,801 per annum based on skills and experience.
