Environment Canterbury is currently building our Marine and Freshwater Biosecurity programmes, to enable us to manage the current and future risks our marine and freshwater ecosystems face.    

You’ll be actively involved in creating, reviewing and implementing a future framework to manage current and future biosecurity risks, relating to marine and freshwater ecosystems.

As a key Advisor, you will work alongside industry, Rūnanga, Territorial Authorities, central government and other Regional Councils as we actively work together to protect Aotearoa’s Marine and Freshwater ecosystems ensuring Waitaha is doing their part to manage these precious ecosystems and ensure the best outcomes. This will be a team approach, and many parties will play their role to ensure its protection.

Most importantly the work you do will help to ensure the protection of our Marine and Freshwater biodiversity, access to Kai Moana, increase the communities understanding of our environment while protecting the infrastructure that enables our economy.

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

Reporting to the Team Leader Regional Biodiversity and Biosecurity this newly created role will be responsible for recommending the actions we take and the tools we use, to ensure we are appropriately protecting our marine and freshwater ecosystems from biological threats.   

This newly created role will have responsibility for the planning, recommendations, risk management, tools and actions of the programme.  Your knowledge of legislative frameworks, key relationship management, pest management and funding management will be key to the success of this role.

 

Mōu │ About You

Ideally you will have a relevant degree and a minimum of 7 years' experience in a similar role working with a high degree of autonomy. You’ll be highly motivated, and passionate about the marine and freshwater space.

More about you:

  • Have knowledge of strategic planning and operational implementation, procuring of services and managing contracts
  • Be familiar with marine and freshwater ecosystems and understand the legislation associated with the marine and freshwater space
  • Be a great communicator, with a positive upbeat energy capable of delivering across various groups and mediums
  • Have an understanding of te au Māori and be confident engaging with our partners under Te Tiriti
